Elderly Woman Struck and Killed by Car Near North 56th Avenue and Richey Road Intersection
YAKIMA, WA (January 23, 2018) – An elderly pedestrian from Yakima was killed in an accident at 5:30 PM on Tuesday evening.
Bernice Mackarness was crossing the street near the intersection of North 56th Avenue and Richey Road, when a southbound Chevrolet Silverado hit her. The Chevy was driven by a 73-year-old man.
Two days after the 96-year-old woman was killed, city of Yakima crews repaired a faulty streetlight close to the scene of the accident. It’s unclear whether or not the light was working when the crash occurred. The victim was reportedly wearing dark clothing, making it hard for the driver to see her. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in this fatal crash.
No charges have been filed at this time, according to Lt. Shawn Boyle with the Yakima Police Department.
Sincere Sympathies to the family and loved ones of Bernice Mackarness. May she rest in peace.
