Child Fatally Struck by Vehicle in San Leon
San Leon, TX (September 16, 2023) – On Thursday night, 9-year-old Benjamin Dennis was removed from life support after a bicycle crash on 22nd Street days earlier.
It was about 7:30 p.m. a surveillance video showed Benjamin Dennis, a fourth grader at Lobit Elementary, and his 6-year-old sister Savannah were about to go on a bike ride with an adult. Benjamin rode his bike onto 22nd Street and a truck turning left from FM 517 struck him.
“I was there right next to the road, so I ran into the road, and I yelled his name, and I dragged him away from behind the truck so it didn’t run over him again,” Savannah stated.
Meanwhile, the children’s mother was cooking inside their home when the accident happened.
Benjamin was transported to the hospital where doctors told his family he was brain dead.
His life support was taken off Thursday night and his organs were donated.
The driver involved in the accident remained at the accident scene. The accident report noted that the driver stopped on FM 517 before turning and did not see Benjamin while the victim’s family says their surveillance video shows the man did not stop before turning.
“You could look at the video and tell me he never saw him,” Nancy Suffield, Benjamin’s grandmother, stated. “He didn’t even know he hit somebody until after the fact, and it was too late.”
Two people were killed in a motorcycle crash at the intersection in less than a month and there is a cross is set up in a memorial of the victims.
