Man Killed, Woman Hit and Critically Injured in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (July 21, 2019) – A man died following a pedestrian crash Sunday afternoon in San Francisco.

The crash happened around 2:10 p.m., at the intersection of Taylor Street and O’Farrell Street. First responders arrived to the area shortly after.

According to police statements, a rented black Tesla traveled north on Taylor. There, the driver ran a red light on O’Farrell, when they were broadsided by an eastbound gray Mini Cooper that crossed a green light.

The impact caused the Tesla to spin out of control before striking two pedestrians who were walking west on the crosswalk.

Both pedestrians, a husband and wife, were severely injured and transported to Zuckerber San Francisco General Hospital for further treatment. However, police later pronounced the male victim dead at the scene.

The San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office later identified the man as Benjamin Dean, 39, of Clovis.

Both drivers remained at the crash site and cooperated with investigators.

A preliminary assessment appeared to find that neither alcohol nor drugs were involved.

Officers arrested the rented Tesla’s driver, a 22-year-old woman with San Francisco and Vallejo addresses, on suspicion of misdemeanor involuntary vehicular manslaughter and running a red light.

The surrounding area closed for a brief time while crews worked to clear the wreckage. However, the roadway has since reopened.

Our deepest condolences are with the family and friends of Benjamin Dean during this difficult time. We also wish with the injured patient a swift and steady recovery.
