34-Year-Old Bicyclist Fatally Injured in Crash near Emerald Cove Drive
BAY POINT, CA (April 23, 2018) – A 34-year-old Bay Point man was killed after being involved in a bicycle-SUV accident on Canal Road on Monday evening.
The incident occurred at 8:37 PM. Based on the initial investigation, the bicyclist was traveling eastbound on Canal Road. Reportedly, he was riding in the middle of the roadway and not within the bicycle lane. At the same time, a 51-year-old Pittsburg man was driving a Ford Explorer eastbound on Canal Road and approaching the bicycle from behind.
The bicyclist then made a sudden left turn for unknown reasons, veering into the right side of the Explorer. From the impact, he was ejected and ended up pinned underneath the Explorer on the asphalt. The unidentified victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the Explorer was not injured in the collision.
Alcohol and drugs are considered to be factors in the fatal collision, but authorities continue to investigate. Any witnesses of the crash or the event leading up to it are urged contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez (925) 646-4980.
