Speeding Leads to Deadly Fiery Crash on Highway 39 in Azusa

AZUSA, CA (November 19, 2018) – One person was killed following a fiery rollover crash late Monday afternoon in Azusa, authorities said.

The crash happened around 5:18 p.m. on Highway 39, just South of San Gabriel Dam.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a sedan was traveling southbound on the highway at an unsafe speed, when the driver was unable to navigate a curve in the roadway. The car then traveled across the northbound lane and across the eastbound shoulder.

The car crashed into a dirt embankment before it went down into a ravine, landing 200 feet East of the roadway’s edge. It burst into flames, starting a brush fire that spread about three acres of mountainside.

Responding firefighters extinguished the fire and located one party about 80 feet East of the roadway’s edge. That individual sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. No identifying information is being released at this time.

Highway 39 was closed in both directions until around 11:45 p.m.

It is unknown if drugs and/or alcohol have played a role in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
