Vehicle Collision Near Highway 50 Results in Fatality

Sacramento, CA (August 23, 2023) – On Monday, 22-year-old Araceli Velazquez of Sacramento was killed in a rear-end collision on Highway 99.

The fatal collision took place near the Highway 50 junction.

Officers said Velazquez was a passenger in a northbound Toyota on the freeway traveling toward the interchange in Oak Park.

The 22-year-old man who was driving the Toyota got distracted and did not see that traffic ahead had slowed.  As a result, the Toyota driver did not break in time and collided with a Peterbilt dump. The Toyota slammed into the left rear of the dump truck which resulted in major intrusion to the sedan.

Immediately, South Sacramento CHP officers and Sacramento Fire Department firefighters responded to the scene and provided life-saving measures. 

The rescuers rushed the driver and Velazquez to hospital where she died. 

The driver incurred major injuries while a 6-month-old infant and 1-year-old toddler that were in riding in the back seat were uninjured in the accident.

Officers are still investigating.
