Drivers Injured in Deadly Collision Near Sr 3
Mason County, WA (March 24, 2023) – On Wednesday, Aparicio Mendoza, a 27-year-old Shelton man, died, and two drivers were injured in a traffic crash on US 101.
The fatal collision happened at about 6:25 p.m. north of State Route 3.
The incident report stated that Mendoza was southbound in a 2002 Volkswagen Passat behind a 2020 Jeep Wrangler. Apparently, he rear-ended the Wrangler and lost control of his vehicle.
Moreover, State Patrol believes Mendoza’s Passat drove into oncoming traffic and struck the front end of a northbound 2004 Audi TT. Then, Mendoza’s vehicle rested in the northbound lanes of the freeway.
The Wrangler rested on the right shoulder of the southbound lanes while the Audi stopped on the right shoulder of the northbound lanes.
A 19-year-old Olympia resident riding Mendoza’s vehicle wore his seatbelt and did not sustain injuries from the collision. Similarly, the drivers of the other vehicles were wearing their seatbelts during the accident.
The paramedics rushed the Wrangler driver, a 60-year-old Shelton woman to MultiCare Capital Medical Center in Olympia. Medics also took the Audi driver, a 64-year-old Shelton woman, to Mason General Hospital in Shelton.
Officers are still investigating the collision near SR 3.

Accidents While on the Road
The Washington Traffic Safety Commission has a plan titled “Target Zero”, with the goal of decreasing deaths and serious injuries on Washington’s roadways to zero by 2030. Despite this, accidents statewide continue to take the lives of hundreds each year.
2021 was the deadliest year on the road that the state of Washington had seen for fifteen years. As a matter of fact, Seattle had 30 traffic deaths that year, a 16-year-high, and 11 fatal injuries in the first five months of 2022, according to a Seattle Department of Transportation report.
Traffic mishaps like the deadly crash on US 101 are a major public health threat and a leading cause of death for people ages 5-64. Therefore, we must know what to do if in case we encounter traffic accidents.
