Joan Terlisner Killed in Aguanga Hit-and-Run Crash
AGUANGA, CA (January 3, 2020) – A man suspected of fleeing the scene after a fatal multi-vehicle crash was arrested Tuesday afternoon.
The incident happened on January 3 around 6:15 a.m., on Highway 371. Dispatchers arrived just north of Wilson Valley Road.
CHP officials said a 2011 Nissan Versa, driven by a 23-year-old Antone Bayard of Anza, was traveling north on the highway at a high rate of speed. It then rear-ended a 1986 Toyota pickup truck.
The Nissan eventually lost control and drifted into the southbound lane of the highway. There, it struck the front of a 2011 Mercedes-Benz. The Mercedes then traveled across the northbound lane and overturned onto the shoulder of the roadway.
Paramedics later pronounced the Mercedes driver dead on scene as a result of the impact. The Riverside County Coroner’s Office identified her as Joan Terlisner, 63, of Aguanga.
Moreover, the driver and passenger of the Toyota remained unharmed.
Bayard fled before authorities arrived. However, investigators tracked him to a location in Coachella Valley.
Two officers confronted Bayard before the three got into an altercation. The officers were injured and Bayard escaped.
On Tuesday, police arrested Bayard and booked him into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Beaumont.
Bayard faces homicide and hit-and-run charges and is being held on $2 million bail.
Our condolences remain with the bereaved family and friends of Joan Terlisner during this tragic time.
