21-Year-Old La Mirada Man Fatally Injured in Two-Car Collision near Monterey Avenue
THOUSAND PALMS, CA (May 1, 2018) – A fiery and fatal accident involving a semi-truck took place on Interstate 10 west, just east of Monterey Avenue, early Tuesday morning. The deceased victim was identified as 21-year-old Anthony Herrera of La Mirada.
The collision took place around 2:00 AM, according to reports from the California Highway Patrol. Herrera was traveling westbound on the highway in a 1998 Honda Accord when, for unknown reasons, he swerved to the left side of the road and struck the center divider.
He then overcorrected to the right and crashed into the concrete wall on the right shoulder. His vehicle came to a stop in the slow lane, where it was hit by a 2012 Freightliner, driven by 39-year-old Jose Saucedo of Nogales, Arizona.
The young man was ejected from the Honda, and pronounced dead at the scene. Saucedo was not injured in the collision, according to Officer Jackie Quintero from the CHP.
Officials shut down all westbound lanes of the I-10 for about an hour for investigation. Traffic was diverted at Cook Street to westbound Varner Road, and back onto the Interstate 10 at the Monterey Avenue on-ramp. It is unclear whether or not drugs and alcohol were contributing factors in this fatal collision.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the incident at this time. No additional information has been disclosed.
Heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Anthony Herrera. May he rest in peace.
