44-Year-Old Woman Arrested after Wrong-Way Collision near Freya Street in Liberty Lake
LIBERTY LAKE, WA (May 11, 2020) – Late Wednesday evening, 44-year-old Amber Karns of Hayden, crashed into a WSP trooper on 90 Freeway.
Washington State Patrol revealed that Karns was traveling east for 13 miles in the westbound lanes between Spokane and Liberty Lake. Dispatchers arrived to the scene around 11:58 p.m., on May 6.
According to reports, the vehicle was first spotted near the Freya Street exit. Troopers then located it at Sullivan Road. In their attempt to get Karns’ attention, troopers drove parallel to her. However, Karns continued driving at freeway speeds.
Meanwhile, a trooper started slowing westbound traffic as Karns’ vehicle approached the area. Officers then deployed spike strips. However, she was able to continue traveling on the roadway.
After utilizing a PIT maneuver just west of Liberty Lake, troopers then successfully stopped Karns. However, the vehicle spun out several times before Karns continued driving until she struck two separate patrol vehicles.
Karns then headed west lanes on 90 Freeway and exited on Liberty Lake. When she pulled over at a gas station, authorities were able to take her into custody. In addition, reports later confirmed that Karns remained uninjured and she was booked into jail for felony hit-and-run and felony eluding.
Furthermore, one trooper sustained minor injuries but was released shortly after receiving treatment.
May this incident be a reminder for all motorists to drive responsibly. In addition, slow down if you see traffic stalling ahead. By doing so, you can help keep yourself and others safe.
