BAKERSFIELD, CA (June 30, 2019) – A 13-year-old boy was killed in a pedestrian crash Sunday evening in Bakersfield.

The crash happened around 7:00 p.m., at the intersection of Niles Street and Park Drive. First responders arrived shortly after.

According to reports, the boy had been standing with a group of other kids near a GET bus stop about 125 feet east of Park Drive. There, they began running south across Niles Street outside of a marked crosswalk, attempting to beat eastbound traffic.

The three other juveniles saw a pickup truck approaching and returned to the northbound shoulder. The victim, however, did not see the pickup and was struck.

Responding paramedics rushed the boy to Kern Medical, where he succumbed to his injuries as a result of the impact.

The young male victim was later identified as Alejandro Vargas Jr. However, his town of residence was not immediately known.

Witnesses reported the truck was traveling at the posted speed limit of 40 miles per hour.

The driver was not suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Investigation of this crash is still ongoing.
