One Killed and Two Injured in DUI Car Crash on Wharf Drive and Port Chicago Highway

BAY POINT, CA (February 22, 2018) – One person died and two others sustained life-threatening injuries in a DUI car crash on Wharf Drive and Port Chicago Highway on Thursday.

The crash occurred around 12:50 AM when a Dodge truck was stopped at a stop sign prepared to turn right onto eastbound Port Chicago Highway, while a Chevrolet Camaro was approaching the intersection headed west on Port Chicago Highway.

The driver of the Chevy, 26-year-old Raul Moreno-Ochoa Jr. of Concord, then veered right into the oncoming lanes of Port Chicago Highway and crashed head-on into the Dodge truck. The two vehicles then ended up against a tree in front yard of a house.

20-year-old Alejandro Moreno-Garcia of Bay Point sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Moreno-Ochoa was transported to the John Muir Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The 51-year-old Bay Point man Dodge truck driver and his 46-year-old female passenger suffered serious injuries and were rushed to the same hospital.

Moreno-Ochoa was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter, according to CHP spokesman Officer Brandon Correia. Investigators also found that Moreno Ochoa Jr. was speeding before the crash. The CHP suspects that Moreno-Ochoa Jr. may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash. They are urging anyone with more information to call their Contra Costa office at (925) 646-4980.
