Injuries Reported in Santa Clara Auto Accident on San Tomas Expressway near Forbes Avenue

SANTA CLARA, CA (June 15, 2023) – Wednesday afternoon, an alarming single-vehicle crash on San Tomas Expressway near Forbes Avenue injured 1 person.

The incident happened in the northbound lanes of the San Tomas Expressway between Forbes Avenue and Homestead Road.

According to reports, a Tesla crashed and caught fire, causing delays on the road.

At around 3:45 p.m., authorities shut down San Tomas Expressway in both directions near the scene of the crash. Meanwhile, by 4:30, the southbound lanes of San Tomas Expressway have reopened. Moreover, the northbound lanes were shut down for several hours but have since reopened as of 8:25 p.m.

Meanwhile, a witness said that speed may have played a role in the crash. According to them, the driver lost control of the Tesla before veering left in the intersection. Then, the driver swerved back to the right to avoid veering off the road and onto the shoulder. However, Tesla struck the curb and crashed.

“It was probably 25 seconds from when I passed and parked my car, to when I got to the driver’s window. I was five feet away. I looked right into the driver’s side window where someone would be sitting. There was only fire. It happened so very fast,” the witness revealed.

Officers confirmed that the crash led to at least one “major injury.” Moreover, authorities advised drivers to travel through the area at low speeds and follow all instructions of emergency personnel on the scene or use alternate routes.

At this time, the circumstances that led to the crash remained unclear. Once additional details become available, the public will be notified.
