Tom Hastings, Amber and Jacob Hill, and Madison Hastings Saxelby in Fatal Plane Crash

AGUA DULCE (February 11, 2018) – A child and three adults were killed on Sunday when a small plane crashed at the 30500 block of Briggs Road northeast of Santa Clarita.

The crash site was in a remote canyon about 40 miles north of downtown Los Angeles, and about a mile southeast of the Agua Dulce Road interchange of 14 Freeway.

The victims have been identified by investigators. Tom Hastings, 65, was piloting the plane and three of his relatives were on board: his daughter Amber Hill, 27; her husband Jacob Hill, 25; and Amber’s daughter Madison Hastings Saxelby, 9. All passengers were killed when the plane crashed.

Firefighters and sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene shortly before 11 AM at the crash site which could be seen just a few feet from the roadway. It is not yet determined what caused the accident according to Allen Kenitzer, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman.

The plane is registered to Thomas G. Hastings who built the plane in 1999. According to Federal Aviation Administration records, the single-engine plane was a Cirrus VK-30 classified as an experimental aircraft. The plane had undergone its annual inspection a month or so ago, according to the pilot’s son, Jake Hastings.

It is not yet confirmed where the Cirrus VK-30 was headed or if there was any emergency call before the crash. According to reports, the small plane hit power lines before it broke apart and crashed, about four miles from Agua Dulce Air Park.

Kenitzer stated that the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board continue to investigate the incident.
