SUNOL, CA (June 8, 2018) – A 9-year-old girl was killed early Friday morning and her parents were hospitalized, following a rear-end collision on Interstate 680.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash took place at 12:20 AM on the northbound I-680. A black 2009 Dodge was heading north in the far left lane approaching the Calaveras Road exit when it failed to observe the traffic slowing down due to an ongoing construction project.

It sped into the rear of a white 2004 Toyota Corolla, which was then pushed into a third vehicle, a gray Ford, driven by a 28-year-old Manteca man. The 56-year-old Tracy driver of the Dodge, admitted to falling asleep at the wheel before crashing into the Toyota.

The occupants of the Toyota, a 9-year-old girl, her 39-year-old father, and her 32-year-old mother were all transported to the Eden Hospital in Castro Valley for treatment and evaluation. The girl succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. Her parents sustained major to minor injuries, but are expected to recover soon.

No other injuries were reported in the fatal accident.

Later Friday morning, the CHP ruled out alcohol and drugs as possible factors, but investigators are still trying to determine other causes that might have contributed to the collision. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to cooperate with this investigation by calling CHP’s Dublin Office at (925) 828-0466.
