Several Injured in MTS Bus and Pickup Truck Collision near Escondido

ESCONDIDO, CA (December 22, 2018) – A total of nine people were injured Tuesday morning when an MTS (Metropolitan Transit System) bus struck the rear end of a pickup truck on the 15 Freeway near West 9th Avenue in Escondido.

According to the California Highway Patrol Border Communications Center, the incident was reported at about 7:16 a.m. A 50-year-old male from Santee, CA was driving the MTS bus on northbound 15 Freeway in the HOV lane number one, approaching the back portion of a stopped 2013 Chevrolet Silverado. The 36-year-old male driver of the Chevrolet, from Ramona, CA, had stopped the vehicle partially within HOV lane number one and then left the shoulder area to adjust the ladder that was placed on the bed of the pickup truck.

The driver of the Chevrolet just entered his pickup truck when the MTS bus struck its rear. The force of the impact pushed both the bus and the Chevrolet into northbound 15 Freeway near 9th Avenue.

The driver of the Chevrolet, the driver of the MTS bus, and seven bus passengers sustained non-life-threatening injuries. They were all transported to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido for treatment and further evaluation.

Officials do not believe that alcohol and/or drugs were factors in the collision. Weather conditions were also ruled out as the cause of the crash as the day was clear and dry when the incident occurred.

The number one and number two traffic lanes of northbound 15 Freeway were closed for approximately two hours while the scene was processed and cleared. All lanes were reopened at about 9:30 a.m.

The collision remains under investigation.
