Driver Suffering Medical Emergency Dies after Crashing Vehicle on 15 Freeway in San Diego
SAN DIEGO (January 4, 2020) – An 85-year-old San Jose man lost consciousness and died as his SUV plunged off the freeway Saturday night in San Diego County.
The crash happened just after 6:00 p.m. on northbound 15 Freeway at Gopher Canyon Road, near Camino del Rey.
According to the CHP, the man and his wife were driving northbound along 15 Freeway when the man turned to his wife and told her he wasn’t feeling well.
Shortly thereafter, the man lost consciousness while the 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser he was driving continued traveling north.
CHP officials said the man’s wife tried to steer from her passenger seat, but the SUV ultimately crashed into the center divider. It then continued across all northbound lanes, went off the road and landed at the bottom of a dirt embankment.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released.
The wife suffered moderate injuries but was alert when first responders reached her.
Further investigation into this accident is underway.
