Homeless Man Struck While Sleeping in Parking Stall in El Camino Real

Santa Clara, CA (October 21, 2020) – On Monday, a 74-year-old homeless man was struck and killed by a vehicle as he was sleeping in a parking stall in El Camino Real.

The accident took place at about 4:30 p.m. El Camino Real and Halford Avenue.

Further, police said the victim was sleeping on the ground near the left edge of a marked parking stall. At the same time, a driver of a 2019 Toyota Camry pulled into a stall to the left of the man.

After a minute without getting out of the car, the driver backed out of the stall.

“During the turning movement, the Camry struck the man, as the driver was unaware that he was sleeping on the ground,” police said.

Moreover, the driver that hit the man with his car stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

Also, the police said drugs, alcohol, and distracted driving were not considered factors in the collision.

Further, the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release the man’s identity once it has been confirmed and his next of kin is notified.

Meanwhile, the police said the same man was hit by a different vehicle at the same location and under the same circumstances on Sunda.

He was treated for moderate injuries at a hospital in that particular accident. Also, the driver in that incident reported not seeing the man lying on the ground.

Additionally, police said a rehabilitation counselor from the Santa Clara County Office of Supportive Housing tried to offer the victim housing resources following the first collision, but he refused all services.
