Semi-Truck Causes Multiple Injuries on I-5 near Highway 16

TACOMA, WA (September 30, 2018) – Late Sunday night, a semi-truck caused heavy traffic and a multiple-vehicle collision on 5 Freeway.

As per reports, the truck was going south on the 5 Freeway around 11:30 PM when it jackknifed, hit the barrier near Highway 16, and caused another semi to crash into the center divider. The impact of the collision caused at least five other vehicles to become involved and one to land on its side after rolling over.

At least six people were transported to local hospitals with varying injuries. One victim suffered critical injuries and is currently in the ICU. There is no update on either person’s medical conditions.

The driver at fault attempted to flee the scene but stopped at the nearest exit. State Patrol officials stated that it did not classify as a hit-and-run and the driver was not cited. He remained on site and cooperated with Tacoma Police officers during their investigation.

Both directions of the freeway were closed for cleanup of diesel that was spilled from the big rig that initially started the collision. On Monday morning, the northbound lanes opened around 5:30 AM and the southbound lanes opened at 6:00 AM.

Troopers continue to investigate the cause of the accident but believe that there were no signs indicating the driver was impaired at the time of the crash. No criminal charges are pending as of yet.

It is important to always be on the lookout for other motorists, if you are operating a large vehicle on the road. By staying alert, obeying traffic laws, and being cautious of your surroundings, you can prevent unforeseen accidents and keep yourself and others safe.
