1 Killed in Merced County Crash on Sandy Mush Road and Highway 59

MERCED COUNTY, CA (December 14, 2020) – Saturday night, a 58-year-old man died in a fiery accident on Sandy Mush Road and Highway 59.

According to reports, at 6:36 p.m., an eastbound 2000 Chevy Blazer traveled on Sandy Mush Road near Highway 59.

Meanwhile, a 40-year-old man driving a 2004 Ford F-150 pickup truck headed on Highway 59. The authorities confirmed that the Ford driver had the right of way. Unfortunately, the Blazer driver failed to stop at a stop sign, revealed Eric Zuniga, public information officer for the CHP Merced office.

Zuniga added that the two cars crashed at speeds of 55 and 60 miles per hour.

As a result, the Blazer’s driver succumbed to injuries. At this time, his identity is being withheld due to pending family notification.

“We don’t know yet whether alcohol had anything to do with this. It doesn’t appear to be the weather, (he) just basically failed to stop at the stop sign,” Zuniga stated. “According to witnesses, there was no attempt to brake at all.”

After the crash, the Blazer caught fire. Fortunately, the 28-year-old male front passenger managed to escape.

Meanwhile, four Ford-150 occupants suffered injuries. Moreover, the driver sustained minor-to-moderate injuries and was transported to a Modesto hospital.

On the other hand, a 37-year-old female front passenger seat sustained minor to moderate injuries. Furthermore, responders transported a 15- and 13-year-old to a Modesto hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
