Pedestrian Dead in Merced County Crash on Santa Fe Drive near Spaceport Entry

MERCED COUNTY, CA (January 17, 2021) – Friday night, a 41-year-old male pedestrian died, and Imelda Devera was injured in an accident on Santa Fe Drive.

According to reports, the CHP officers came to a crash involving a sedan that collided with a fence at around 11:00 p.m.

On their way to the scene, CHP officers received a report that Atwater Police Department and Merced County Sheriff’s Deputies also responded and found a dead pedestrian.

The pedestrian, from Winton, was down in the No. 2 northbound lane of Santa Fe Drive.

Additionally, the authorities found a Hyundai Elantra in a dirt field north of Santa Fe Drive and east of Spaceport Entry.

Meanwhile, the investigation revealed that the 47-year-old Elantra driver traveled at around 55 mph in the No. 2 lane of westbound Santa Fe Drive.

Furthermore, the pedestrian seemed to be walking or standing in the middle of the No. 2 westbound lane. He was standing directly in the path of the car.

Because of the pedestrian’s dark clothing and lack of lighting in the area, the driver, Mr. Devera, didn’t notice the pedestrian. Thus, the vehicle hit the pedestrian.

Afterward, the Hyundai went across the north shoulder of Santa Fe Drive and crashed into a chain-link fence. As a result, the 47-year-old Winton man sustained minor injuries.

Ultimately, the authorities confirmed that the driver was not under the influence of any drugs or alcohol during the collision.

The pedestrian succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

We would like to extend our sincere condolences to the loved ones of the victim. We also wish for Mr. Devera’s speedy recovery.
