Wrong-Way Driver Among Injured in Santa Maria Crash

SANTA MARIA, CA (March 22, 2019) – Paramedics rushed three people, including a wrong-way driver, to a hospital following Thursday’s crash on Highway 101 near Betteravia Road.

Around 10:45 a.m., California Highway Patrol, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department and paramedics arrived to find one car on its roof following a wrong-way accident.

According to CHP, two people inside the overturned vehicle required extrication. They, as well as the 82-year-old Nipomo woman who reportedly drove in the wrong direction, demanded immediate hospitalization. An ambulance shuttled all three patients to Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Meanwhile, emergency crews closed the southbound Betteravia Road on-ramp and diverted traffic off the highway at Stowell Road. By 12:15 p.m., officials reopened all lanes.

At this point, investigators are seeking the reason behind the wrong-way driving and where the woman entered the highway.
