Vista Resident Killed in Pedestrian Accident on State Route 78

 
San Marcos, CA (January 09, 2021) – On Thursday, a 22-year-old male driver from Vista died in a pedestrian accident on State Route 78.
 
The fatal accident took place at about 6:15 a.m. east of West San Marcos Boulevard.
 
Apparently, he was driving a 2007 Ford Focus east when he veered off the freeway.
 
His vehicle struck a guardrail, then went about 20 feet down an embankment south of the freeway.
 
A witness said the man’s vehicle was not visible from the freeway.
 
After the crash, the driver walked up the embankment. Then, he walked into the right lane of eastbound State Route 78.
 
Unexpectedly, a 2017 Toyota Camry driven by a 27-year-old San Marcos man struck him five minutes after the initial crash.
 
Unfortunately, he died at the crash scene.
 
Moreover, officers said it was unidentified why the man veered off the freeway.
 
Meanwhile, authorities issued a traffic alert, with the fast lane and number 2 lane to remain open. However, they closed the two right lanes of eastbound State Route 78.
 
Similarly, the eastbound onramp to the freeway from San Marcos Boulevard was also closed.
