Driver Arrested After DUI Fatal Crash on State Route 169 in Covington

Covington, WA (October 21, 2024) – On Monday, a 21-month-old baby died in a DUI crash on State Route 169.

The collision occurred around 3:15 p.m. near State Route 169, resulting in the death of a 21-month-old baby and the hospitalization of both drivers, according to the Washington State Patrol (WSP).

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced at 7:30 p.m. that all lanes of SR 18 were open again. 

Earlier, the highway was blocked in both directions as a Life Flight helicopter arrived at the scene to assist. 

WSP Public Information Officer Trooper Rick Johnson reported that the crash happened when a driver crossed from the westbound lanes of SR 18 and collided with an eastbound vehicle.

The deceased 21-month-old child was a passenger in the eastbound vehicle. Both drivers were injured and airlifted to local hospitals. 

Investigators confirmed that the driver, a 19-year-old man, was arrested on charges of DUI, vehicular homicide, and vehicular assault.
