Separate Collisions in Santa Barbara Injures 2 Men

SANTA BARBARA, CA (March 28, 2019) – Two people were injured in two separate rollover crashes in Santa Barbara Sunday, according to the Santa Barbara Fire Department officials.

Fire Battalion Chief Jim McCoy said that the first collision occurred in the 1100 block of North Milpas Street, near East Anapamu Street and the Santa Barbara Bowl, at around 2 a.m. It involved a late-model convertible Ford Mustang.

The Mustang struck a parked vehicle and a motorcycle trailer before overturning and coming to rest on its wheels. A male passenger was trapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated by firefighters. He was taken by American Medical Response ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with severe injuries. His identity and details on his condition were undisclosed.

According to police Lt. Dan McGrew, officers searched the neighborhood but were unable to locate the driver who was missing at the scene when firefighters arrived.

The second crash, involving a Subaru SUV, happened at Hope Avenue and Calle Real, in front of Santa Barbara Auto Group, at around 3:30 a.m.

The Subaru was traveling northbound on Highway 101 and apparently took the short Hope Avenue exit at a high rate of speed. The SUV struck a K-rail on the exit ramp then overturned and came to rest on its side. It collided with a Lexus that was on Hope Avenue preparing to turn west onto Calle Real. The Subaru was severely damaged.

The Subaru’s driver was the lone occupant of the vehicle. He was trapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated by cutting off the roof which collapsed down pretty good. The Subaru driver was taken to Cottage Hospital with moderate injuries. His name and the details on his condition were not immediately available. The two female occupants of the Lexus were uninjured. Both crashes remain under investigation.

The Hope Avenue intersection was the scene of a similar rollover crash in the middle of the night on March 10. That incident also required a lengthy extrication of the driver.

Driving at unsafe speeds is a serious threat to your and other people’s safety. It is important to always drive within the posted speed limit and abide by all traffic laws. Slow down if you see traffic stalling ahead to avoid hitting other vehicles. Always remember that reaching your destination safely is the most important.
