Wrong-Way Driver and Passenger Dead in DUI Crash on Highway 24 in Orinda
ORINDA, CA (June 30, 2019) – Two people were killed and five others were seriously injured following a DUI wrong-way crash early Sunday morning in Orinda, authorities said.
The crash happened around 1:52 a.m., on westbound Highway 24 near the Wilder Road exit.
According to the CHP, a silver Saturn Vue was traveling the wrong way when it collided head-on with a black Toyota Camry. As a result, the passenger in the Saturn was pronounced dead on scene.
The driver, a 35-year-old man was transported to a hospital for further treatment. However, he was also later declared dead as a result of the impact.
The Toyota driver, a 25-year-old Daly City man, was taken to Kaiser Permanente Vacaville Medical Center with major injuries. However, there has been no update on his current condition.
His four passengers, all men likely in their 20s were also seriously injured and were transported to local hospitals for further treatment.
The surrounding area was closed for more than two hours while crews worked on the scene. However, the roadway has since reopened.
Officers determined the driver of the Saturn was under the influence prior to the crash. Multiple alcoholic containers were found in the car.
Further investigation of this incident is still currently underway.
