Two Dead, Five Hurt after Chino Hills Collision on 71 Freeway
CHINO HILLS, CA (June 13, 2019) — Two died and five others were injured after a multi-vehicle collision on 71 Freeway on Wednesday, June 12.
The pileup involving a box truck and five other vehicles happened on the southbound 71 Freeway at Butterfield Ranch Road.
The chain reaction crash started at around 8:15 a.m. when a box truck could not or did not slow down as traffic slowed in front of him. From the initial investigation, authorities said that the truck first struck one car and pushed it out of the way. After that, it hit a Honda Accord, killing two people inside and severely injuring a 15-year-old.
The truck then lost control, and then spun across lanes. This caused the truck to overturn onto a car and pin another against the guard rail.
Two people died at the scene. Paramedics transported a total of five people to the hospital, including the 15-year-old who was in critical condition.
It’s not yet determined if a slowdown caused by the loss of lanes is what led to the incident.
Officials rerouted off the freeway at Pine. They also shut down the southbound lanes at Butterfield Ranch Road for several hours.
