Injuries Reported in Goleta Plane Accident on Highway 101

GOLETA, CA (January 30, 2025) – Wednesday afternoon, a crippling small plane crash on Highway 101 injured 2 people.

The incident happened at around 2:15 p.m. on the Bishop Ranch, north of Highway 101, between Glen Annie Road and Los Carneros Road.

A single-engine Cirrus SR22 crashed on Bishop Ranch, north of the freeway between Glen Annie Road and Los Carneros Road. The four-seat aircraft caught fire upon impact, sending a large column of black smoke into the air as emergency crews arrived.

According to Fire Capt. Scott Safechuck, two people were on board—a 29-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman. Both suffered major injuries and were transported by AMR ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Their conditions have not been disclosed.

The crash ignited a small vegetation fire, which firefighters quickly contained. The California Highway Patrol temporarily closed one northbound lane of Highway 101 and the Los Carneros Road offramp, leading to traffic delays.

Preliminary reports from FlightRadar24 suggest the aircraft was performing a touch-and-go maneuver on one of Santa Barbara Airport’s shorter north-south runways before the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident. Personnel from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol also responded to the scene.
