4 Hospitalized after Washington DC Pedestrian Accident on 18th Street

WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 20, 2020) – Tuesday afternoon, four individuals suffered injuries in a crash on 18th Street near Newton Street.

The incident happened just before 5:00 p.m. on 18th Street NW near Newton Street. The crash took place when a speeding vehicle struck two small children and two adults walking on a sidewalk in the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood. According to reports, the driver of a dark-grey Nissan Altima with D.C. tags fled the crash scene.

“On the sidewalk right here, the car went all the way down the sidewalk and finally crashed across the street,” revealed Brad Harris, a resident of 18th Street. “When I came out, I saw two kids bloody and a woman on the ground.”

The eyewitnesses revealed that the driver drove at high-speed north on 18th Street. Then, he hit a parked car, crashed into a tree, and jumped up on the sidewalk before hitting the victims. Moreover, the driver also broke a wall before finally colliding with a fire hydrant on Newton Street. Then, the driver ran.

D.C. Fire and EMS tweeted that the four have “serious or potentially critical injuries.”

Furthermore, the eyewitnesses confirmed that both adults remained alert. However, both children were crying upon the responders’ arrival.

Facts about Pedestrians and Accidents

Pedestrians have the right of way at any crosswalk or intersection. Therefore, it’s a driver’s responsibility to yield and be prepared to stop.

While car accidents are far more common than pedestrian accidents, there is still reason to be wary when traveling on foot.

Furthermore, common locations for these pedestrian incidents include shopping center entrances, street corners, and intersections.

“Pedestrian accidents do not occur as much as motor vehicle accidents. Nevertheless, the pedestrian accidents tend to include more serious injuries,” says Tyler Toomey, a practicing attorney at Sweet Lawyers.
