2 People Hurt in Fresno County Bicycle Crash on Friant Road

FRESNO COUNTY, CA (June 11, 2020) – Tuesday night, two bicyclists suffered injuries in an auto accident on Friant Road.

The incident happened on N Friant Road and Millerton Road at around 6:20 p.m.

The CHP came to the crash scene just before 6:30 p.m. after a report of a car crashing into two bicyclists near Millerton Lake.

According to reports, the two bicyclists rode east on Millerton Road. However, the driver of a westbound Honda Civic lost control and steered onto the shoulder of the road. As a result, he crashed with the two cyclists head-on.

Responders transported both male drivers to a local hospital with major to critical injuries.

The family members revealed that the riders sustained concussions and one may have an orbital fracture.

Meanwhile, the Honda driver and three passengers remained uninjured.

Also, the CHP officers ruled out drugs or alcohol as a factor in the crash. However, they added that speed or distracted driving possibly played a role.

“Just make sure you are attentive to your driving. Put down those cell phones and just limit those distractions. You just never know what you’re going to face when you come around these corners, up these hills,” CHP spokesperson Mike Salas reminds motorists.

Cyclists use that particular stretch of roadway often, especially in good weather.

“Just as a reminder, these bicyclists that are out here. Share the road with them, give them space; if it’s at all possible, move over. There is the ‘move over’ law which does require the driver to move over at least three feet, if possible,” Salas added.

Salas also reported that the bicyclists used helmets during the crash. They are both expected to survive the accident on Friant Road

The next day, the Madera Police revealed that one of the two bicyclists injured is an officer with their department.

This may serve as a remind to be cautious of bicyclists on the road when driving. Bicycle accidents are extremely dangerous because of their lack of protection and lightweight bodies. By paying attention to your surroundings and driving within the speed limit, dangerous accidents can be prevented.
