Child Suffered Major Injuries in Los Alamos Bicycle Crash

LOS ALAMOS, CA (April 12, 2019) – A boy suffered injuries following a bicycle accident in Los Alamos on Wednesday, April 10.

According to the California Highway Patrol, at around 7:30 a.m., officers rushed to the scene near the southbound on-ramp to Highway 101 at Highway 135.

The reports said that a 13-year-old boy rode his bike westbound against the flow of traffic en route to Olga Reed Elementary School. Meanwhile, a vehicle turning right on the highway struck him. Officers identified the driver as 50-year-old Karen Nielsen, of Los Alamos, CHP Officer Michael Gruver stated.

The impact od the crash caused the 13-year-old boy to be thrown off from his bike. He suffered major injuries as a result, according to Gruver.

Paramedics transported the child by Calstar medical helicopter to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

Authorities believe that drugs or alcohol were not factors in the collision, Gruver stated. The boy did not wear a helmet at the time of the incident, he added.

When behind the wheel, it is important to always be on the lookout for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists. As a bicyclist, make sure to suit yourself with the proper biking equipment.
