16-Year-Old Male Passenger Killed in Horrific Car Crash on North 1st Street [Merkel, TX]

1 Dead in Merkel Auto Accident on North 1st Street 

MERKEL, TX (March 23, 2025) – Friday night, a 16-year-old male passenger died in a horrific car crash on North 1st Street.

The incident happened at about 7:04 p.m. on North 1st Street.

According to the Merkel Police Department, a sedan traveling west on North 1st Street collided with an SUV that was turning left into Humphries Village from the eastbound lane. 

The sedan carried four passengers: a 16-year-old female, a 16-year-old male, and two 14-year-old females. The SUV was occupied by one adult and one child. Authorities reported that the sedan’s driver had to be extricated, while the other three passengers exited without assistance. 

The 16-year-old male passenger later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 12:27 a.m. on March 22. 

One of the 14-year-old female passengers suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital, while the other 14-year-old female had non-life-threatening injuries. The sedan’s driver was airlifted to the hospital in critical but stable condition. 

Police confirmed that none of the sedan’s passengers were wearing seatbelts. The adult and child in the SUV were not reported to have sustained serious injuries. Authorities noted that the students in the sedan were from Clyde ISD and were on their way to the Clyde vs. Merkel baseball game. 

The investigation is ongoing. A memorial service will be held at Clyde Methodist Church at 7:00 p.m. on March 22 to honor the life lost and offer prayers for the injured and their families.
