1 Dead in Cape Girardeau County Auto Accident on Interstate 55

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (December 3, 2024) – Monday afternoon, a devastating traffic crash on Interstate 55 killed 1 person.

MSHP Sgt. Clark Parrott reported a crash on December 2 at approximately 4:25 p.m. near the 114-mile marker on Interstate 55 southbound, about 9 miles north of Jackson. 

Initially, the number of vehicles involved was unclear, but it was later confirmed that two pickup trucks were involved.

The first truck, driven by a 29-year-old man from Perryville, veered off the road and struck the back of the second truck, driven by an 18-year-old woman from Cape Girardeau. The impact caused the first truck to overturn, killing the Perryville driver. A 28-year-old passenger in the same truck sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment.

Of those involved, only the Cape Girardeau driver wore a seat belt. Sgt. Parrott also noted icy bridge conditions in the area and urged drivers to exercise caution as officers handled multiple crashes in the county.
