1 Dead in Mendocino County Auto Accident on State Route 1 near Caspar Bridge

MENDOCINO COUNTY, CA (December 1, 2024) – Last Thanksgiving night, a person died in a devastating head-on crash on State Route 1.

The crash between a van and a sedan happened at around 9:55 p.m. on State Route 1 near the Caspar Bridge.

Emergency crews responded to a crash that completely blocked both northbound and southbound lanes. According to California Highway Patrol (CHP) logs, the roadway was fully obstructed, and the coroner arrived shortly after 10:15 p.m. Tow trucks from All in One Towing and Smith Towing were called to remove the vehicles, both heavily damaged with severe front-end impacts and broken axles.

The highway remained closed for several hours as law enforcement and cleanup crews worked through the night. Traffic was redirected at both ends of the bridge, and additional personnel were called in to manage the scene. The roadway reopened early Friday morning once the wreckage was cleared.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims, pending family notification. CHP is continuing to investigate the cause of the collision and encourages anyone with information to contact the Mendocino Area office.
