DUI Crash on 80 Freeway in Richmond Kills 1 Passenger and Leaves Another Badly Injured

RICHMOND, CA (June 8, 2019) – One person was killed and another one was seriously injured following a DUI two-vehicle crash late Saturday afternoon in Richmond.

Authorities responded around 5:12 p.m., on 80 Freeway. Dispatchers arrived near the Central Avenue exit shortly after.

A gray Nissan Sentra was traveling east, weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed. As the Nissan approached the Central Avenue off-ramp, it sideswiped a white Mercedes-Benz SUV at about 50 mph.

The impact consequently caused the Nissan to lose control and overturn. Two occupants were ejected onto the freeway as a result.

One passenger was pronounced dead on scene due to the impact. Another passenger suffered major injuries, and was later airlifted to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek for further treatment.

The driver of the Nissan was subsequently arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence.

The two occupants in the Mercedes were unharmed.

All eastbound lanes of the freeway were closed for about 45 minutes as a CHP helicopter landed on the scene. All lanes were open by 7:50 p.m.

No identifying information has been released at this time. The incident still currently remains under investigation.
